The Monarch School was founded in 1997 in response to a critical need in the Houston area to serve children with neurological differences who required a program which provided cognitive, emotional and social development components. In lieu of such a program being offered in Houston, many families were forced to send their children to residential out-of-state schools. Monarch opened in the fall of 1998 with 23 students and has grown dramatically in size and support each year since. This year the enrollment is at capacity with 100 day students, more than quadrupling the original enrollment. The current faculty and staff numbers 57. In addition, we see approximately 2,000 new clients each year through our summer program, diagnostic clinic and learning center. The Monarch School’s mission is to provide an innovative, therapeutic education for individuals, aged 3-24, with neurological differences such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, PDD-NOS), Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder, Learning Disabilities, Tourette Syndrome, Mood Disorders (Bipolar Disorder, Depression), Anxiety Disorders, and other neurological differences. The majority of our students also have executive functioning problems, which is addressed through our unique Executive Functions program. But at Monarch, working with children has never been about labels. For us, it's about knowing each child as an individual, unique in the universe.
