Sharon Johnston Park

783 Coleman Rd New Market, AL,

1.4 Average Rating

Sharon Johnston Park is a 250 acre park located in New Market, Al, in the northeast corner of Madison County. The Madison County Commission along with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources entered into an agreement to dedicate Sharon Johnston Memorial Park on June 4, 1979. The park was named for Sharon Johnston whose family owned the land. At the age of 31, Sharon Johnston died in a plane crash at a stunt show. While performing, her plane hit some turbulent winds and her plane crashed. The park has a 12 acre fishing lake, campground, olympic size pool, picnic and group shelters. The district does not have a community playground for children, and the play area at Sharon Johnston Park has antiquated equipment. The playground is not large enough to support the growing community. Parents, grandparents, out-of-towners visit the park each day. A new playground is at the top of all visitors "Wish List" for the park. A community-built playground project is in the works. Once our financial goal has been reached, the community will build a SAFE and USER-FRIENDLY playground for ALL the children of North Alabama.

I grew up playing at this park and I have so many great memories there. I would really love if we could help make Sharon Johnston even better by putting in an awesome playground so our kids can have wonderful memories too!

I'm the Grandmother of a 3 yr. old little boy with Cerebral Palsy. We desperately need a playground that James can use and enjoy just like typical children his age. I'm certain many other special needs children in our community would love the opportunity to play on a playground designed for ALL children! I've signed up to work, volunteer, fund raise, anything that is needed to make this playground a reality. The park itself is beautiful but the playground is a poor testimony to this community's commitment to children. With the help and direction of Kaboom we can be proud of the playground that will most certainly be built in the near future! Jane Hillis

What a wonderful out poor of verbal support we have received from the community. What we need now is for the community to step up and VOLUNTEER. We have a small group of people doing A LOT of work and we will not last if this continues. We don't need you to commit all of your time. Be willing to get the playground updates and fill in when you can. Thanks

This area is growing in size and making room in the schools. We need something for the families and community to enjoy outside and be able to run and play. The park would get so much use.

I agree. It's a great park but the playground really needs new equipment!

yes we had a pool membership this year for the first time and it was great! well worth it...but like it's been said, we need a big nice playground there too! it truly is a beautiful park that has LOTS of room! let's work to get it filled up with activities and make SJP the best in North Alabama! :-)

the new director is energetic and excited about bringing this park to life. there are so many activities that happen here already just no one use to advertise them. Horse shows, family runs, etc. a park would be a wonderful addition and I think would bring more people to the park.

I am SO excited to see all of the events that are being planned to help SJP! I can't wait to take my kids to play there when it's done!

It is sad to drive through the park and see nothing and no one there. Let's help this park and get this playground built so that we can get people in our community to bring their families back to SJP. It is a beautiful area with so much potential. It is in need of a major upgrade when it comes to the playground! Wouldn't it be nice to see families and children playing at the park again?
