Springhill Lion's Park

Lisgar Street and Main Street Springhill, NS,

2.3 Average Rating

Our humble Nova Scotian town is rich in history and strong in spirit. Our community has survived multiple coal mining disasters, fires that destroyed Main Street and the collapse of our community Arena. Even in the face of adversity the citizens of Springhill unite each time to rebuild not only fallen structures but our hope, spirit and our pride. Once again our community is uniting and this time it is to celebrate our history by rejuvenating the Lion’s Park. Springhill Lion’s Park is a green space that offers something for all of us who live here. The park is home to basketball and tennis courts, baseball diamonds and a play area that includes a jungle gym, slide and swings. It is a great area for kids and it also offers a place for parents to sit in the shade and chat while watching the children play. The park gives us space to hold festivals, tournaments, fundraisers, summer day camps, movies under the stars, and the list goes on. Before our green space was transformed into the Springhill Lion’s Park, it was a track for harness racing. Jockey’s would bring their horses from far and wide for a chance to be crowned the champion at our track. After years of racing, the track was developed into Victoria Park to honour Queen Victoria. The park was complete with a bandstand which would be full with local musicians each Sunday afternoon filling the town with great local music. Hurricane Hazel blew the roof off that very same bandstand as she blew through the park in 1952. The Lion’s Club responded to Hurricane Hazel’s destruction by purchasing the park and taking care of the grounds. Shortly thereafter the park became known as Springhill Lion’s Park and remains that way today. Now, our beloved park is starting to show her age; something that the beautiful flower gardens cannot quite mask anymore. With the economy in dire straits, our town needs to work within strict financial guidelines which limit projects to rejuvenate our park. With natural wear and tear and financial restrictions it is difficult to keep the park up to date. Having such a great sense of pride and knowing what it takes to survive, our community has started to look for more creative opportunities to help us reach our goals. The Imagination Playground in a Box set would be tremendous in helping our modest town move forward in restoring our park and ensuring it will continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

Hello Springhill Lion's Park supporters - with only 15 hrs to go before the voting closes, the 40 autistic kids at New Heights Learning Services are asking for your help to keep us in the top three and to ensure that a Canadian School has a shot at the playground. Please help us out by switching your vote today for New Heights. Your support would mean the world to our kids. Thanks.

I spent two years growing up in Springhill in the late 70s and spent many hours enjoying the Springhill Lions Park. Moved to Oxford and joined the Oxford Lions Club in part because I knew what Lions contributed to the community. The park in Springhill is a clear example. Good luck Springhill, it needs to be saved for your kids. George Ferdinand

My memories of this park span a good number of years. From playing there as a child throughout the summer. To the kids club held every year. To the music concert with Blue Rodeo. My son still enjoys the park when we are home visiting. Please allow this park to continue to provide enjoyment for the people for years to come.

It would be nice to see the Lions Park upgraded for the kids who live here. There's so many talented kids around here, albeit who play baseball, soccer, hockey, skateboarding, tennis or basketball who deserve a place to be proud of. Whenever the park comes up in conversation, so do all kinds of issues. I would like to say thank you to those who run this contest because some kids somewhere will have a place to be proud of. It's also nice to see the people in this town rallying behind this. To be a small town and in 4th place behind cities like St.Louis and Dunedin is pretty impressive...Way to go Springhill !!!

Our Lions Park has so much to offer kids and adults of all ages .... but the existing resources are not all as user friendly as they should be. If our Lions Park; ball fields, soccer field, playground, basketball court, tennis court and skateboard park were able to recieve a major facelift, it would be a rally point for the whole community!! Imagine how far the buzz would spread and how much more our community would come together, and how many more of our citizens would participate and get active!!!! Something good is happening to our Lions Park right now!!!

You both are right! I think that now that the community has identified this as something we see to be concern we need to work together to get this moving forward!

I couldn't agree more with you! If we all rally together, use a little elbow grease all of the park could be updated. It could bring larger tournaments and groups to our area which inturn would help out with our local businesses to keep Springhill a thriving community
