Our humble Nova Scotian town is rich in history and strong in spirit. Our community has survived multiple coal mining disasters, fires that destroyed Main Street and the collapse of our community Arena. Even in the face of adversity the citizens of Springhill unite each time to rebuild not only fallen structures but our hope, spirit and our pride. Once again our community is uniting and this time it is to celebrate our history by rejuvenating the Lion’s Park. Springhill Lion’s Park is a green space that offers something for all of us who live here. The park is home to basketball and tennis courts, baseball diamonds and a play area that includes a jungle gym, slide and swings. It is a great area for kids and it also offers a place for parents to sit in the shade and chat while watching the children play. The park gives us space to hold festivals, tournaments, fundraisers, summer day camps, movies under the stars, and the list goes on. Before our green space was transformed into the Springhill Lion’s Park, it was a track for harness racing. Jockey’s would bring their horses from far and wide for a chance to be crowned the champion at our track. After years of racing, the track was developed into Victoria Park to honour Queen Victoria. The park was complete with a bandstand which would be full with local musicians each Sunday afternoon filling the town with great local music. Hurricane Hazel blew the roof off that very same bandstand as she blew through the park in 1952. The Lion’s Club responded to Hurricane Hazel’s destruction by purchasing the park and taking care of the grounds. Shortly thereafter the park became known as Springhill Lion’s Park and remains that way today. Now, our beloved park is starting to show her age; something that the beautiful flower gardens cannot quite mask anymore. With the economy in dire straits, our town needs to work within strict financial guidelines which limit projects to rejuvenate our park. With natural wear and tear and financial restrictions it is difficult to keep the park up to date. Having such a great sense of pride and knowing what it takes to survive, our community has started to look for more creative opportunities to help us reach our goals. The Imagination Playground in a Box set would be tremendous in helping our modest town move forward in restoring our park and ensuring it will continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

Its been awhile since I have spent some time in our park. My kids are grown and have moved on. Free time today, allowed me to enjoy the company of others....workers, kids, mums, dads and other grandmothers. It was a very pleasant time even with the park equipment being quite shabby, the kids made-do as kids will. It was a topic of conversation amongst the adults as to how long its been since an upgrade and on how improvements would be appreciated. Happy memories build strength. Winning new playground equipment from KaBoom would certaintly do that and then some.

That is the great thing about our park...there is something for everyone there. I do agree it is in need of some TLC and new equipment can get the ball rolling!

I would love as well to Springhill upgrade their park. My kids love to go there but it is looking a little rundown.
I agree that the park area provides a relaxing place for all ages. The children do make use of what is available but certainly do not have many choices. Another guest

The Springhill Lions park has been a wonderful community meeting place and event site for many years thanks to the dedicated members of the former Springhill Lions Club who, with hands on sweat and hard work, made their vision of a community greenspace a reality. Today those wonderful civic volunteers are a part of our town's history, but their legacy lives on, and their vision has become ours to carry forward; ours to dream new dreams ; ours to improve, grow and make reality. Using the facility as it has been for many years, our people have proven that the efforts and vision of those members of the Springhill Lions Club were not in vain, and the continued use of the park area demonstrates the need for upgrade and renewal to meet the potential that the future presents to us. What wonderful events and happenings have taken place here already! What MORE wonderful things could take place with the help of KABOOM !!! I submit this comment giving my full support to this project, and in doing so I give tribute to my late husband, Michael, and his fellow Lions Club members who had the foresight to establish the park so many years ago.LET"S DO IT, SPRINGHILL!!!

Following the disasters of the 1950s, there was an outmigration of Springhills population, reducing it from just over 7000 to about 3700 where it is today. Unfortunately, the cost of running the town has remained the same and in some departments gone much higher. This has left very little tax cash for discretionary spending on projects such as recreation facilities. KUDOS however must be given to the people for what they have accomplished with what they have. The center of the towns recreational activities is the Community Center. As a senior citizen who does not live in the town I go there often to avail myself of the walking track, see a hockey game,or any of the other activities that the Center generates. I am always impressed by the staff there and the quality and quanity of the programs they initiate.Six years ago this Town didnt have a rink; today it is home to the Atlantic Junior Hockey Champions. Using temporary goalposts and a soccer pitch that is fashioned by temporarily elimating the only two ball fields the soccer teams always seem to do well. As do the minor baseball teams even though there isnt a full size baseball field to play on.The available space is taken up for the two softball fields/soccer pitch. Skate parks are non existent , the kids use sidewalks and parking lots for these activities.

In summation of my previous comments this Town has a top notch Community Center being run by Top Notch people ; unfortunately the outdoor facilities do not measure up If ever any town needed and deserved a lift it is Springhill.

The foam manipulatives are very impressive. I love all the creations made by the kids in the video. If our playground wins, I'm sure it will be constantly used by local residents, nscc and tourists. Great things are accomplished when kids work together in a fun environment! This playground will stimulate the minds of local area youth.

I am so excited to support such a worthwhile project!! The town of Springhill has worked so hard over the years to rebuild from mining disasters to two fires which destroyed our downtown to the collapse of our arena!! Our town is MOST deserving of this fantastic prize!!
