Springhill Lion's Park

Lisgar Street and Main Street Springhill, NS,

2.3 Average Rating

Our humble Nova Scotian town is rich in history and strong in spirit. Our community has survived multiple coal mining disasters, fires that destroyed Main Street and the collapse of our community Arena. Even in the face of adversity the citizens of Springhill unite each time to rebuild not only fallen structures but our hope, spirit and our pride. Once again our community is uniting and this time it is to celebrate our history by rejuvenating the Lion’s Park. Springhill Lion’s Park is a green space that offers something for all of us who live here. The park is home to basketball and tennis courts, baseball diamonds and a play area that includes a jungle gym, slide and swings. It is a great area for kids and it also offers a place for parents to sit in the shade and chat while watching the children play. The park gives us space to hold festivals, tournaments, fundraisers, summer day camps, movies under the stars, and the list goes on. Before our green space was transformed into the Springhill Lion’s Park, it was a track for harness racing. Jockey’s would bring their horses from far and wide for a chance to be crowned the champion at our track. After years of racing, the track was developed into Victoria Park to honour Queen Victoria. The park was complete with a bandstand which would be full with local musicians each Sunday afternoon filling the town with great local music. Hurricane Hazel blew the roof off that very same bandstand as she blew through the park in 1952. The Lion’s Club responded to Hurricane Hazel’s destruction by purchasing the park and taking care of the grounds. Shortly thereafter the park became known as Springhill Lion’s Park and remains that way today. Now, our beloved park is starting to show her age; something that the beautiful flower gardens cannot quite mask anymore. With the economy in dire straits, our town needs to work within strict financial guidelines which limit projects to rejuvenate our park. With natural wear and tear and financial restrictions it is difficult to keep the park up to date. Having such a great sense of pride and knowing what it takes to survive, our community has started to look for more creative opportunities to help us reach our goals. The Imagination Playground in a Box set would be tremendous in helping our modest town move forward in restoring our park and ensuring it will continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

Seeing all the kids in the Springhill Lions Park last night playing soccer was amazing. And all the family members and friends that came out to cheer was Heart Warming!! Hats off to the Springhill Community Centers Recreation Department and all the volunteers who made this happen. As a sports fan with young children I realize the importance of the Lions Park and know how much work needs to be done to make improvements to the park and to make it more safe and user friendly. Springhill is a great Town showing much promise. I LOVE OUR PARK AND OUR RECREATION DEPARTMENT!!!

Thank you so much for your support Evan! These types of grassroot movements are really what starts to get things happening. The Springhill Mixed Martial Arts Club - Matmen MMA is proof of this!

Yesterday during our Summer Fun camps we lead the kids on one of the trails around the park. During our walk one our camp leaders dressed as a pirate ran through the trails jumping out at the kids...they loved it! It was a great way to get them moving and have fun!

The Springhill Lions Park deserves to receive recognition & funds to assist in providing a place where children & even adults can go to play ball, soccer, hold various events, have a picnic. This park has been an integral part of the town of Springhill for many years, thanks to the Lions Club who developed this space. And, much appreciation for the dedication of those who have continued to keep this park alive!!

Thank you for your support! We can keep working away to make sure the entire town knows about this opportunity. It would be great to get all 5000 citizens involved in this movement :)

The Springhill Lion's Park is used by many families for various reasons; sports, leisurely walks, the playground equipment, etc. Any upgrade we can get to our park would be greatly apprecitated. Katrina
