Springhill Lion's Park

Springhill Lion's Park

Lisgar Street and Main Street Springhill, NS,

2.3 Average Rating

Our humble Nova Scotian town is rich in history and strong in spirit. Our community has survived multiple coal mining disasters, fires that destroyed Main Street and the collapse of our community Arena. Even in the face of adversity the citizens of Springhill unite each time to rebuild not only fallen structures but our hope, spirit and our pride. Once again our community is uniting and this time it is to celebrate our history by rejuvenating the Lion’s Park. Springhill Lion’s Park is a green space that offers something for all of us who live here. The park is home to basketball and tennis courts, baseball diamonds and a play area that includes a jungle gym, slide and swings. It is a great area for kids and it also offers a place for parents to sit in the shade and chat while watching the children play. The park gives us space to hold festivals, tournaments, fundraisers, summer day camps, movies under the stars, and the list goes on. Before our green space was transformed into the Springhill Lion’s Park, it was a track for harness racing. Jockey’s would bring their horses from far and wide for a chance to be crowned the champion at our track. After years of racing, the track was developed into Victoria Park to honour Queen Victoria. The park was complete with a bandstand which would be full with local musicians each Sunday afternoon filling the town with great local music. Hurricane Hazel blew the roof off that very same bandstand as she blew through the park in 1952. The Lion’s Club responded to Hurricane Hazel’s destruction by purchasing the park and taking care of the grounds. Shortly thereafter the park became known as Springhill Lion’s Park and remains that way today. Now, our beloved park is starting to show her age; something that the beautiful flower gardens cannot quite mask anymore. With the economy in dire straits, our town needs to work within strict financial guidelines which limit projects to rejuvenate our park. With natural wear and tear and financial restrictions it is difficult to keep the park up to date. Having such a great sense of pride and knowing what it takes to survive, our community has started to look for more creative opportunities to help us reach our goals. The Imagination Playground in a Box set would be tremendous in helping our modest town move forward in restoring our park and ensuring it will continue to be enjoyed for years to come.

Located in the centre of town this park gives great enjoyment to young and old!! A facelift is much needed and would help aid in giving many more years of smiles to our little town!!=0)

For many (both visitors and residents alike) the Springhill Lion's Park has remained a symbol of the pride and spirit of a town that refuses to quit. Despite the many tragedies in it's 121 year history - Springhill continues to rise to each individual challenge with the fortitude and community spirit that has sustained it through some difficult setbacks. The Lion's Park is an aging facility that, due to dwindling financial resources, has suffered from those financial restraints. While still a beautiful green space within the landscape of our town, it could use a "facelift" and this generous prize from Kraft could go a long way in bringing that dream to fruition. Springhill - a place we are proud to call home - plays hosts to thousands of visitors each year as they tour the Anne Murray Centre and the Miner's Museum. This is an area of town where they stop off to enjoy a picnic lunch or to take a breather as they venture on to other destinations within the province. FIrst impressions are lasting impressions. Let's give them something to remember - a beautiful and "renewed" Lion's Park. Help us make this a reality!

This park is in a great location. Down in the centre of town, when the sun is shining the park gets everybit of sun. It is also located next to the arena so the two help each other out in terms of recreation and looks. Although this park would be alot better if it got a renovation.

This is also a great space to walk your favorite pet...however, you need to bring along your pooper scooper (plastic bag) so that others are not inconvenienced and that the park remains "clean" for the children playing there. Come use it, but you need to take some pride in it too!

The park is a great place used by all ages from the community. Conveniently located in the center of town. My children use the soccer field and playground. It is in need of upgrades and what better way to invest in the community then this, something that's used by all... =)

the park is a great green space in the middle of town. It could use new playground equipment and a proper soccer field.

Jessica is doing a great job organizing events in this beautiful park to keep "Springhillers" active. Let's do our part and get out there and join her on her mission to make us more healthy and active. It's a win-win situation. Thanks Jessica.

Having grown up in Springhill my entire life, our lions park has always been the heart and soul of our community; however, it is in need of a facelift and some up to date play equipment!

I am fairly new to the area and the park has a ton of green space to run and play but there is nothing to play on. A splash pad would be a fabulous addition.

This is so true , The Lions Park is the "hub" of the town where children , youth and adults can go to enjoy the area. A facelift to this area would be great if for no other reason but to give the kis a safe place to play an have fun .

Our Lion's Park has been used for years as a meeting place to bring the community together! It has been home to hundreds of concerts, festivals and events. This is a FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY for our small community to win an upgrade for one of the MOST USED spaces in town!!!!!

There are so many cool things that we could add to this park. For instance, a splash pad, new equipment, flowers, picnic table area...

Without the Lion's Park, we as summer staff would likely be out of a job. Our soccer, tee-ball and tennis programs as well as our summer fun camp take place in the park. Although the Lion's Park provides us with a wonderful location where we can provide these services to the children of Springhill, the aging and weathered equipment and inadequate field conditions pose a huge challenge to the operation of these programs. For these reasons, and many more, we give our full support to this nomination, and know first hand that Springhill is more than deserving of this amazing opportunity. Updating and improving the facilities in the Lion's Park would add to the quality of the programs we are able to offer to the children of Springhill.

Just a reminder to everyone that Old Home Week is well underway! The activities in the park have been a huge success so far and lots more to come. Thursday is our second movie under the stars - bring the whole family for Alvin & the chipmunks the Squeakquel! Bring a blanket or chair and we will see you there!
