The National Building Museum has a great area for kids called the Building Zone that's devoted to playing with the built environment but the atrium at large is always filled with kids playing, and they have fantastic activities (arches, geodesic domes)

"The Building Zone is toddlers’ paradise, a vast open space filled with oversize Lego blocks, wooden train tracks, construction-worker uniforms and hundreds of indestructible toys." http://frugaltraveler.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/04/inside-the-beltway-with-baby-aboard/ So true!
